Microsoft may turn to mobile gaming for crowdsourced mapping data

Microsoft may look to users for updated mapping data with mobile gaming

Keeping map data relevant's a full-time job -- just ask Nokia, Google and, yes, even Apple. Which is why Microsoft may be gearing up to offload some of that heavy lifting to users in the augmented reality guise of mobile gaming. Or at least that's one possible future outlined by a recently surfaced patent application. The USPTO doc, filed back in June of 2011, clearly lays out a crowdsourced "data collection system" whereby users sent on virtual missions to specific real-world targets would aid in the gathering of up-to-date geo-location data. With its thriving Xbox gaming arm and reinvigorated inroads into the mobile space, it wouldn't be much of a stretch for Microsoft to leverage a bit of corporate synergy to make its own mapping service more accurate, or simply license the data. Whatever the case may be, it's all up in legal limbo for the time being. So, for now, you'll have to content yourselves with AR missions of the Ingress kind.

Self Improvement Times: Time Management Strategies - Overcome ...

Time management strategies must address your personal challenges to be truly effective. Countering your Time Gremlins wins you still more time. Isn't it a delicious feeling to break free of them?

They are, of course, a part of you, and can only be opposed when you take the time to get to know them. They grow out of your history, your values conflicts and unfinished business. Yet they can most certainly be overcome. I think it's great news that your Time Gremlins are completely dependent upon you in order to survive. They can only thrive by using your energy. And they do so by hitchhiking rides on your plans, trying to scoot under your radar.

Granted, these Time Gremlins are clever... But believe me, you can be smarter! It's best to take them on one at a time, so I'll start with one of the most widespread ones.

The People Pleaser Gremlin

The People Pleaser Gremlin wheedles you into empowering others. So it's most helpful to understand your motivation in undermining yourself this way.

* Do you doubt your ability to proceed independently?

* Do you try to win people's favor in the hope of receiving some reward?

These are common concerns. Yet when you value others' priorities over your own, you forfeit your ability to plan effectively.

Apply The Antidote for the People Pleaser Gremlin.

To apply the antidote to the People Pleaser Gremlin, ask yourself these questions. Then jot down each answer in a sentence or two:

1. What is the worst thing that can realistically happen if you meet this challenge?

2. When you put yourself first, what new challenges will you face?

3. In what way will meeting these new challenges help you grow?

4. How will you become more clearly defined?

5. What is your very first step that you can perform in a single sitting?

Take that all-important first step as soon as you possibly can! Remember that courage grows with action. And Time Gremlins lose their power as soon as you stop believing in their distorted messages.

You will receive a number of additional benefits when you develop more self-reference:

Your ability to prioritize will increase, because you'll be paying more attention to yourself and less attention to others. Your ability to follow through on your priorities will improve, too, because you won't be re-routed by others' demands. Interestingly, you will find people respect you more and trust you more, because they will sense your growing authenticity. Furthermore, you won't be as likely to overbook yourself and then fail to follow through.

One of the most profound discoveries about taking back your power from your Time Gremlins is that you not only have more time - you also have more of yourself.

So what is your next step to truly take your power over your time into your own hands?

Singer Jenni Rivera dies at 43

Millions of fans are mourning the death of popular Mexican-American singer and reality show star Jenni Rivera, ?La Diva de la Banda,? as she was also known, following the crash of the small plane taking her and some members of her team from Monterrey, ?Mexico. ?She had performed in a concert and was heading to the region of Toluca, where she was also scheduled to sing. ?Rivera was 43. ?She leaves behind 5 children and 2 grandchildren.

The popular singer of norte?as and bandas was currently one of the top Latina performers, according to Billboard magazine . ??She has had 10 top 10 songs on Billboard?s Regional Mexican Airplay chart (including a No. 1); 8 top 10 entries on the Regional Mexican Albums chart (including four No. 1s); seven top 10 hits on the Top Latin Albums chart (including one No. 1); and one top 10 hit on the Hot Latin Songs chart. She has sold approximately 1,158,000 albums in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan,? states Billboard.?Rivera was nominated several times for a Latin Grammy.

Rivera was the star of a reality show,??I Love Jenni,??on?mun2. ?The popular show was one of the network?s top rated programs. Rivera?also had a show on mun2 about her daughter Chiquis, Jenni Rivera presents Chiquis and Raq-C. ?

Just a few days ago the bilingual, bicultural Latina star ?had recently announced she had signed on with ABC to do a comedy, ?Jenni,? about a middle-class single mother and business owner. Rivera was also a coach on the Televisa show, ?The Voice Mexico.?

Rivera was born and raised in Long Beach, California, to immigrant Mexican parents. ?She came from a musical family. Jenni Rivera recorded her first album, Chacalosa, in 1996. ?Apart from her children, Rivera had been married 3 times. The singer?announced in October that she was divorcing her third husband, former Major League pitcher Esteban Loaiza,??who played for teams including the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

People En Espa?ol had listed Rivera as one of its?25 Most Powerful Women in October.

The website Latino Rebels pointed out Rivera was one of the first stars to raise awareness of Arizona?s SB1070 law. ?It linked to a?Colorlines magazine post which details Rivera?s participation in protests against the law. ??It doesn?t respect humanity and it?s racist,? she said at a rally about SB1070.

In 2010, Latina magazine asked ?La Diva de la Banda? what she thought it meant ?to be Latina.?

?It means that things haven?t been easy for us because the market is still dominated by males,? said Rivera in the interview. ??I want to be able to tell my people, my girls and my fans out there, that ?yeah, we can do it.? It?s not easy, but we can do it. And we can have fun on the way!? Rivera said in 2010.

?La Diva de la Banda? will sing to us eternally from heaven,? tweeted popular singer Luis Fonsi after news of Rivera?s plane crash. ??Rest in peace.?

What if games held you to a higher standard?

The 'Nintendo Wii U' is a great device now, but it might not hold up over time. NBCNews.com's Todd Kenreck reviews the device. Play video

What would?games be like if the rules were a bit more strict? After all, doesn't it strike you as odd that they let you, the player, take every penalty kick, plan every attack, and fly every ship? Are you really that good at all of that??This fun little video from BBC Three imagines a scenario where skill is a requirement (language warning):

Maybe we would all take gaming a bit more seriously if we had to sit down for a bit when we fouled someone in FIFA, or had to go back to practice when off-beat?in Guitar Hero.

The clip is from BBC comedy show Dawson Brothers, but if you want to watch the rest of the episode you have to live in the UK. Everyone else can peruse the BBC Comedy YouTube channel, which has plenty to choose from.

Numark Electrowave

We've been checking out some of the latest affordable DJ headphones recently, and the field has plenty of entry-level contenders. In the affordable realm, our favorite (thus far) is the $149.95?(list)Numark Electrowave. If you can get past the white-blue-silver styling (and glow-in-the-dark logo), which isn't necessarily for everyone, this is a very comfortable, powerful pair of headphones with the typical DJ features, like flip-away earcups and detachable cables. The fact that it's more affordable than respectable competing models like the Pioneer HDJ-1500 and Technics RP-DH1250, while keeping up with them from an audio performance standpoint, wins it our Editors' Choice.

Design
The white-blue-silver design scheme for the Electrowave, complete with an involved logo emblazoned above each earcup that, for good measure, glows in the dark, might be a turn-off for some. It's not my favorite look, but style is very personal, so we'll focus on the functionality of this sturdy pair. The earpads are plush and covered with felt, while the headband uses plenty of cushioned padding in a white, leather-like material.Numark Electrowave inline

The headband has a very nice locking feature so that once you've adjusted it to the preferred size, it stays in place. Unlike the Pioneer HDJ-1500, it has a very secure fit, so leaning forward or backward quickly is not a concern?these won't fall off. The earpads are exceedingly comfortable, as is the cushioning of the headband.

As would be expected of a DJ pair, the earcups flip away and the headband is fairly flexible, though not as flexible as the designs of the Technics and Pioneer pairs we recently tested. Regardless, it's easy to free up an ear in a hurry, and like all of the pairs we've looked into lately, the Electrowave features a detachable cable that locks into place.

In fact, the Electrowave ships with two cable options?one coiled, stretching cable, and one straight, both about 10 feet in length. Neither has phone controls, unlike the Technics pair, but this hardly seems like something a dedicated DJ needs on his or her primary mixing tool. Both cables terminate in 3.5mm connections, but the Electrowave ships with a screw-on ?-inch adapter. A black, unlabeled drawstring carrying pouch is also included.

Performance
A pair of DJ headphones had better be able to produce deep bass frequencies powerfully and distortion-free. The Electrowave does this, but also excels in another, equally important area?it reproduces mid-high and high frequencies clearly and crisply, allowing the all-important attack of drum hits to sit comfortably in the forefront of the mix.

The Electrowave has no problem reproducing the challenging deep bass of the electronic drum beat in the Knife's "Silent Shout" distortion-free, even at top volume. But its reproduction of the mids and highs brings out the drum hit's intense attack as well, giving definition to the thunder.

The sculpted mids and highs also help vocals stand out, whether on a stripped-down singer-songwriter-type track from Bill Callahan or on more layered rock mixes, like Grizzly Bear's "Yet Again." On Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild," the high-mids almost outshine the presence of the sub-bass, pushing the attack of the kick drum loop to the forefront while the sub-bass synth hits get less boost than they would from, say, the Beats Pro by Dr. Dre?.

Compared with the pricier Technics RP-DH1250, the Electrowave seems similar, if perhaps slightly less boosted, in the sub-bass frequencies, and perhaps a bit brighter?the Technics pair seems a bit more focused on midrange content than the higher frequencies. Sonically, I'd give the Electrowave the slight edge here, but both pairs are quite comfortable, and it's really a matter of taste (and price). In terms of comfort, both pairs have a marked edge over the Pioneer HDJ-1500, but I'd say that the HDJ-1500 and the Electrowave battle more or less to a draw in terms of audio performance?both are powerful, with deep bass and clear, articulate highs.

Beyond this price range, the Beats Pro is a snazzy option with lots of bells and whistles, as well as solid performance, and in the less expensive realm, the Shure SRH550DJ ?is a perfectly capable entry-level DJ pair. Given that the Electrowave is more comfortable and affordable than the Pioneer pair, and can hang with the Technics pair sonically (despite being far less expensive), it gets the slight edge?and our Editors' Choice?in this crowded field of new DJ headphones.

Kim Soane, Bobbi Brown's 'Left-Hand Woman,' Reveals The 5 Things You Need In Your Makeup Bag

  • On <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/29/the-best-way-to-apply-foundation-from-bobbi-brown-marlo-thomas-mondays-with-marlo_n_2213729.html" target="_hplink"><b>finding the perfect foundation</b></a>: "The trick is yellow. We call it skin-tone correct, but you want to make sure that your foundation has a little bit of yellow in it. A lot of women will say 'I have pink undertones' but you may need a little bit of yellow in the foundation to cut out the pink."

  • On how much time we should allow: "<a href="http://videos.huffingtonpost.com/tech/3-minute-makeup-routine-517276748" target="_hplink"><b>it shouldn't take more than five to ten minutes to do your everyday look</b></a>...honestly three to five minutes and it comes down to knowing what your basics and your essentials are."

  • On the <a href="http://videos.huffingtonpost.com/tech/winter-beauty-essentials-517280705" target="_hplink"><b>five essentials every woman should have</b></a>: "You need your <b>moisturizer</b>. You need eye cream...You also need a <b>face cream</b>, something with a sunscreen in it, whether it's your tinted mositurizer, a foundation, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/29/the-best-way-to-apply-spf-marlo-thomas-mondays-with-marlo_n_2214386.html" target="_hplink">something's gotta have an SPF</a>...<b>under-eye concealer</b>, because a lot of times when you're tired or not feeling as fresh, or your makeup doesn't feel right or you're having a bad beauty day, you want to use under-eye concealer (<a href="http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/cms/learn/video/how_to_corrector.tmpl" target="_hplink">Bobbi in fact calls it "The secret to the universe"</a>). [You also need] your blush. <b>Blush</b> is probably Bobbi's second favorite product, and finding that color that when you pinch your cheeks, you get that natural flush or when you've just exercised and you come in from the outdoors, that is the sort of color or warmth you want on your cheek. Finding that color in a blush whether or not it's a cream or a powder, that is absolutley one of your essentials...and for a lot of women it's either <b>mascara</b> and, or eyebrows. So a couple coats of mascara and you really see that difference...those would be absolute minimal essentials" -- you got that? Eye-cream, moisturizer, concealer, a blush (cream or powder), and something for our eyes, either brows or lashes (or both, why not!).

  • On the best way to make your eyes pop: "It's interesting watching Bobbi over the years do so much makeup, a lot of the times when we're doing makeup it's isn't always about eye shadow colors, but the eyeliner. So if you have to pick <a href="http://videos.huffingtonpost.com/tech/how-to-apply-pencil-eyeliner-517205266" target="_hplink"><b>definitely go with eyeliner</b></a> because that gives definition and shape to the eye and the eye shadow is what you see after."

  • On the best eye shadow based on eye color: "[For brown eyes] anything from a soft taupe to a soft grey, depending also on the skin tone. But Bobbi loves brown on brown eyes, or taupe on brown. For instance with green eyes, a lot of women come to the counter saying 'Oh I'm supposed to wear purple shadow' but you have to be careful with that because what do you see first, the purple shadow -- you don't see the green of their eye. So Bobbi loves, on green or hazel eyes, soft taupe, cool grey tones look beautiful -- we have a beautiful color called "Heather" which is a mix between a purple and a grey for green eyes. On blue eyes she loves warm tones and loves blue on blue. So greys, silvers, sparkly, platinum colors. So <a href="http://www.instyle.com/instyle/best-beauty-buys/product/0,,20360907_20356219,00.html" target="_hplink">blue on blue, green on green, brown on brown</a>, then it makes the whole eye pop."

  • On contouring: "Don't do it. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/25/bad-celebrity-makeup-contouring_n_1446271.html" target="_hplink">Walk away from the contouring</a>. Contouring looks awesome in magazines, you can pull it off on runway, but in real life it just looks like muddy makeup on the face. <b>The Bobbi way of contouring is with two products -- one is with your bronzer and the other is with your blush</b>. You apply bronzer where the sun would naturally hit your face. So that's the forehead, nose, chin and through the cheek area. Bobbi's number one tip for applying blush is that you smile and apply it on the height of the cheek. And if you apply blush when you smile, on the apple of your cheek and bring it back towards the top of your ear and down a little, it looks lifted and higher. There are <a href="http://videos.huffingtonpost.com/healthy-living/how-to-contour-your-face-215877390" target="_hplink">subtle natural ways to contour</a> for real women." Noted.

  • On getting rid of <a href="http://www.glamour.com/health-fitness/blogs/vitamin-g/2012/06/beauty-health-face-mapping--wh.html" target="_hplink">dark circles</a>: "<b>For <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/05/best-eye-cream-wrinkles-dark-circles-bags_n_1855197.html" target="_hplink">extreme under eye darkness</a> there are correctors and concealers</b>. Correctors are either pink or peach colored and what that does is it neutralizes the under eye. And then add your concealer. There are products made especially for under eye and the reason you want to use products that are only made for under eye is because they are creamier. The under eye skin is so much thinner and shows fine lines faster, so to use a corrector and concealer you don't need to blend the two, but the trick is, you want to make sure your under eye concealer is one shade lighter than your foundations or the rest of your face. That helps to lift and brighten but won't be too obvious or create that raccon look."

  • On taking off your makeup: "<b>Never rub your eye area, just gently press and tap</b>. When you remove your eye makeup, just gently hold and press because the skin is so delicate and shows the wear and tear faster than the rest of our faces."

  • On making your makeup last all day: "<b>Use long wear eye products</b> -- there are products that have that 12 hour claim to them and they work, <a href="http://www1.macys.com/shop/beauty-cosmetics-and-fragrance/bobbi-brown-makeup?id=46221" target="_hplink">Bobbi's works,</a> they hold for 12 hours -- you should never have to re-apply your eyeshadow or your eyeliner or your mascara after you've worked the full day and are going out at night. Carry your powder. You probably are going to have to carry a little blush, every TV shoot we do, every fashion show we do we are touching up blush. And blush is something where after half an hour it fads out. To carry even a cream blush or a pot rouge and some gloss. A little bit of powder, blush, gloss."

  • On finding the right shade of <a href="http://www.refinery29.com/red-lipstick" target="_hplink">red lipstick</a>: "The best thing is to try it on," she said. "You want something that is going to be a contrast to your skin tone. If you find that you have a really warm skin tone and you want your lips to pop, try something cooler. And if you have a cooler skin tone then try something that's warm -- that contrast is what's going to pop. Blue undertone lipsticks, in general, are what make your teeth look whiter, so if you want your bright white smile then choose more of a cooler red, like a blue-red."

  • On making lipstick stick: "<a href="http://videos.huffingtonpost.com/travel/applying-lip-liner-149477322" target="_hplink"><b>Lip pencils are an amazing tool</b></a>. If your <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/10/29/no-bleeding-lips-review_n_2040583.html" target="_hplink">lipstick doesn't stay on, or you want more definition to your lips</a>, try a pencil that's the color of your lip and then use that almost as your lip base. If you have a harder time, or for the holiday season with a red lip, get a red liner and that helps perfect the shape and helps it stay on. So apply lip liner over the whole lip, lipstick and then finish off with a liner."

With a referendum on Scottish Independence due to be held in 2014, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has appointed seven one year senior fellowships with overall funding of 1.3 million.

The ESRC Scotland Senior Fellowships scheme invited applications to provide evidence and analysis across the broad range of issues and policy areas affected by the Scotland independence debate and the longer term future of the UK and Scotland.

The scheme forms part of a programme of work addressing issues around the future of Scotland, the UK and more widely. The programme aims to both inform the debate in the run-up to the referendum and assist in planning across a wide range of areas which will be affected by the outcome of the vote, whether for independence or the Union. These include voting, culture and identity, business intelligence, fiscal and monetary policy, policy development, building of new constitutional arrangements, and defence and administrative practice.

    The seven selected fellows are:

    • Dr Angus Armstrong, National Institute of Economic and Social Research,
Currency and fiscal policy options for an independent Scotland
    • Professor David Bell, University of Stirling,
      Fiscal aspects of constitutional change
    • Professor John Curtice, National Centre for Social Research,

The referendum on Scottish independence: a democratic audit

The Fellows will also act as champions for the social sciences, promoting the importance of social science research in addressing current and future issues in relation to possible Scottish independence.

ESRC Chief Executive Professor Paul Boyle comments: "The consequences of the outcome of the vote will be significant. The process of preparation is also, in itself, likely to have impact. It's crucial that the best possible independent research evidence should be available to inform those who need it, such as Scottish voters, and individuals and organisations inside and outside Scotland who are making decisions which may be affected by the vote process and outcome. The ESRC is uniquely placed to provide such high-quality, research-based, and independent evidence to inform the debate, both before and after the vote".

Insights into the genetic causes of coronary artery disease and heart attacks

    Monday, December 3, 2012

In the largest genetic study of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) to date, researchers from the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D Consortium report the identification of 15 genetic regions newly associated with the disease, bringing to 46 the number of regions associated with CAD risk.

The team identified a further 104 independent genetic variants that are very likely to be associated with the disease, enhancing our knowledge of the genetic component that causes CAD.

They used their discoveries to identify biological pathways that underlie the disease and showed that lipid metabolism and inflammation play a significant role in CAD.

CAD and its main complication myocardial infarction (heart attack) are one of the most common causes of death in the world and approximately one in five men and one in seven women die from the disease in the UK. CAD has a strong inherited basis.

"Our research strengthens the argument that, for most of us, genetic risk to CAD is defined by many genetic variants, each of which has a modest affect," says Dr Panos Deloukas, co-lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We went beyond traditional genetic association studies to explore likely genetic signals associated with the disease and to use the information to identify biological pathways underlying CAD.

"Our next step is to design new analyses to also test rarer variants to provide a full catalogue of disease associations that in the future, could identify individuals most at risk of a heart attack."

The Consortium spanning over 180 researchers from countries across Europe (UK, Germany, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Greece), Lebanon, Pakistan, Korea, USA and Canada analysed DNA from over 60,000 CAD cases and 130,000 apparently unaffected people. The researchers integrated the genetic findings into a network analysis and found the metabolism of fats being the most prominent pathway linked to CAD.

The second most prominent pathway, however, was inflammation which provides evidence at the molecular level for the link between inflammation and heart disease.

"The importance of the work is that while some of the genetic variants that we have identified work through known risk factors for CAD such as high blood pressure and cholesterol, many of the variants appear to work through unknown mechanisms," says Professor Nilesh Samani, co-lead author from the University of Leicester. "Understanding how these genetic variants affect CAD risk is the next goal and this could pave a way to developing new treatments for this important disease."

This study provides a useful framework for future projects to elucidate the biological processes underlying CAD and to investigate how genes work together to cause this disease.

Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, which co-funded the research, said: "The number of genetic variations that contribute to heart disease continues to grow with the publication of each new study. This latest research further confirms that blood lipids and inflammation are at the heart of the development of atherosclerosis, the process that leads to heart attacks and strokes.

"These studies don't take us any closer to a genetic test to predict risk of heart disease, because this is determined by the subtle interplay between dozens, if not hundreds, of minor genetic variations. The real value of these results lies in the identification of biological pathways that lead to the development of heart disease. These pathways could be targets for the development of new drug treatments in the future."

PST: Remember how bad Galaxy was?

CARSON, Calif. ? You have heard the names David Beckham and Landon Donovan circling fiercely around the domestic soccer media whirlwind over the last few days.

Robbie Keane has gotten his Irish due, and rightly so. Bruce Arena is reaching ever higher on the legend scale.

All well and good, but this point absolutely cannot be overstated: The Los Angeles Galaxy absolutely would not be MLS Cup repeat champions today without commanding center back Omar Gonzalez.

It wasn?t just what the Galaxy?s center back and his ever growing shadow on this team meant to Saturday?s 90 minutes at the Home Depot Center ? although Gonzalez surely put his big paw prints on the match like no one else.

Gonzalez rescued the entire L.A. Galaxy season. There?s a fairly high probability the Galaxy would not even had qualified for the playoffs without the high-value contributions of the fourth-year man.

Think about that. No Beckham farewell coronation. No Donovan to get his fifth MLS Cup. No Arena to get his fourth.

Just a bunch of pricey stars left to explain how things went so pear shaped.

(MORE: Gonzalez?s Man of the Match performance)

Remember the low point? When Bruce?s boys fell to the ? wait for it ? Carolina RailHawks back in late May, going down the U.S. Open Cup drain that night. At that point the Galaxy had won just three of 13 MLS matches and had crashed out of the Open Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League.

The club was awful. The defending champs were awful.

Players have explained away the stunning reversal that followed by talking about better attitudes. They found the hunger and the inner drive that had been so horribly misplaced. The players hand Arena a lot of the credit, and rightfully so.

Donovan has banged on about Beckham?s role, about the former England captain?s rising refusal to accept lesser; I?m sure Donovan is right.

But who are we kidding here? None of that would matter with the back line, one pounded into such an inferior state relative to the fierce product on rear guard patrol during the 2011 championship campaign, had not improved so substantially. And that?s all about Gonzalez.

The simplest explanation for the early misfiring was never a mystery: the defense wasn?t very good. Plain as that.

Gonzalez helped the Galaxy regain their defensive footing, and the long march toward reclamation of glory was officially ?on.?

Said Beckham: ?Omar isn?t just a special player, he?s a special person as well. He works hard, he listens. He?s a young player with a lot of talent. I hope someday that he will play for the U.S. national team more regularly because he deserves it. He?s been dancing around in there [locker room] naked, so he definitely deserves it after that. He deserved the MVP today and are very lucky to have a young player with his talent on this team.?

Egypt election commission set for vote on charter

CAIRO (AP) ? The Egyptian president's top legal adviser says the country's election commission has begun preparations for the referendum on a highly contentious draft constitution.

Mohammed Gaballah said Monday that the commission, which is composed of senior judges, began meeting a day earlier to organize the Dec. 15 referendum.

Gaballah claimed that judges will oversee the vote despite a strike by the judiciary to protest a set of decrees issued by President Mohammed Morsi that place him above judicial oversight.

According to Egyptian law, judges must observe the voting at polling stations.

Morsi's decrees also gave immunity to the Islamist-led constituent assembly, which hurriedly approved the draft charter last week despite an opposition boycott.

The president's decrees have split the nation, and plunged Egypt into a deepening political crisis.

Chancellor Osborne says sticking with austerity plan

LONDON (Reuters) - Chancellor George Osborne said on Sunday that he would stick with his deficit-reduction programme when he presents a half-yearly fiscal statement on Wednesday.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer declined to comment more specifically on whether he would be able to meet debt targets, but stressed he did not believe Britain should borrow more or increase spending.

At his "Autumn statement" on Wednesday, Osborne is expected to defend his stringent economic policies as the only credible way of solving the government's biggest political problem - its failure to deliver a strong recovery.

"It's clearly taking longer to deal with Britain's debts, it's clearly taking longer to recover from the financial crisis than anyone would have hoped, but ... to turn back now ... would be a complete disaster for our country," he said in a BBC television interview.

British media reported on Sunday that Osborne plans to cap the amount of tax relief high earners receive on their pension contributions alongside reining in the welfare budget.

Osborne declined to comment on the reports, but did not reject the proposals directly when questioned in the interview.

He also declined to say if the country's independent fiscal watchdog would show him still on track to eliminate Britain's underlying budget deficit within the next five years, or to have debt as a share of national income on a downward path by the 2015/16 tax year.
